In order to start any construction project, some basic carpentry techniques are necessary. If you do not consider yourself a "handy" person, don't overwhelm yourself with the daunting task of renovation and ask a friend for help! If you are confident in your skills then here is a couple of things you should start off with:

  1. Plates and Breams - This is usually the first step in framing and structure and it must be done with precision and care. Take your time laying them within their proper dimensions and in the correct pace. This first step can make or break a job if it is not done correctly from the get-go.
  2. Framing Floors - Be sure to check if there is a need for solid blocking. If it, it will make your life so much easier to put in place before the floor is sheathed.
  3. Framing Walls - One quick tip is to place the beam pockets in while before the beams of the wall are placed upright. Doing this will prevent you from running into studs nailed to the beam pockets and having to remove them.

Next week we will discuss framing roofs and building stairs! Stay tuned.
